Sarah Elizabeth Gordon

Sarah Elizabeth Gordon has been creating poetry since before she could read, making up verses to the rhythm of her rocking horse. She is fascinated by juxtapositions of language, nature, and myth. Her work has appeared in The Parliament Review and in River River.

Square Route

The square root of a negative number is imaginary;so too is a square route through life.Even a walk around a square block is not square.
Under the metal and wood scaffolding, pigeons huddleand only grudgingly strut out of your pathas rain pours down on the city.
Oncoming umbrellas force you to move aside, twist sideways into a nook behind a trash can.
A sodden rag blocks a storm drainthat overflows the sidewalk in a rivuleteasily avoided.
The lights of taxis reflect off the storefrontwhere a hurried man steps out in front of youand you dance asidebut not happily like Gene Kelly in Singing In the Rain,
nor are you nearly as elegantwith the rain cascading down your hooded yellow raincoat.
A feral cat rockets out of an alley and almost trips you.You stutter-step, stop, slow down and speed up,walk in loops like a meandering river, but you never walk a straight line.
