Midwinter Morning
Driving out hard into the cold sharpyou stare into a distant something
I sit beside you, still, neither of us talking the mackerel sky is dappled red as the last
cherry blossom leaves almost hang on, when we cross the bridge at the foot of St. Johns
a glimpse of rising sun falls low across the water a shimmer of golden light in the bulrush
I want to shout stop. Look. Quick, let’s go back before it’s all gone.

Benediction
Here at evening’s turn in the woods fir trees fall towards the lakein a hugin a sigh so gentle their shallow roots hardly tear the soft moss- carpet of the earth.
They tip their heads down lowin-unisonbowedin gentle genuflection to the lakeshore –to the moon.
